Insomnia is a sleep disorder where the individual affected has difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. Insomnia can influence the body and mind, affecting the individual’s day-to-day activities. Those who have insomnia will have difficulty falling asleep, wake up during the night and have trouble falling back asleep and wake up too early in the morning. The individual often feels tired after waking up and wants a decent night’s sleep.
Two types of insomnia can be diagnosed; primary and secondary. With primary insomnia, the individual will have sleep problems and nothing else directly associated with the sleep issues like a health problem or condition. Secondary insomnia means the sleep issue is due to something else, such as a health condition like heartburn, depression, or asthma. This type can also be associated with pain, medication, or substance use, such as alcohol.

When visiting your physician for IBS, the doctor will use a ruling-out process to determine if you have the condition. There are usually no physical signs, so questions are asked to narrow down what might be happening with your body. Researchers have created two areas of criteria for the diagnosis of IBS as well as other disorders of the gastrointestinal system.
Rome Criteria is the first set that looks for sure signs and symptoms. Abdominal pain and discomfort must last a month thrice and occur within the last three months. This pain and distress must be associated with two or more criteria; improvement after a bowel movement, an altered stool frequency, or a modified stool consistency during a bowel movement.
The second set of criteria is known as Manning Criteria. This set focuses on pain relieved during a bowel movement, incomplete bowel movements, and changes in stool consistency or mucus found in stool. The more of these symptoms you have, the more likely you will suffer from IBS.
